UN-Habitat is launching its call for nominations for the 2024 round of the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award. Initiated in 1989, the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award recognizes individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions in the field of urban development, including improvement of the quality of urban life and provision of adequate, affordable, and accessible housing for all.

 

Nominations for the award should come from third parties only (no self-nominations) before the deadline of 17 May 2024.

 

For over 30 years, the award has recognized 192 initiatives from individuals or entities worldwide. Previous winners include Fukuoka city in Japan, French firm Veolia Environment, Rwanda’s capital city Kigali, Habitat for Humanity International, the URBAN Intergroup at the European Parliament, and Australian non-profit Wintringham Specialist Aged Care.

 

The Executive Director of UN-Habitat will select up to five winners following recommendations by a panel of experts and leaders in sustainable urbanization. The winners will receive the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award – a plaque engraved with the winner’s name – at the global celebration of World Habitat Day in Querétaro City, Mexico, on 7 October 2024.

 

In selecting the winners, UN-Habitat will consider best practices, initiatives, and innovative solutions contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities. Special attention will be given to how initiatives, practices, or individuals align with the topic of World Habitat Day 2024 of “Engaging youth to create a better urban future,” which will explore how new generations can be engaged in planning their urban present and future through participatory processes and local leadership opportunities.

 

Individuals and organizations working on sustainable urban projects that have had a great impact on society can be nominated for the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour.

 

These include:

- Government and intergovernmental organizations or agencies, including bilateral aid agencies

- Local and regional governments or their associations

- Civil society organizations

- The private sector

- National habitat committees or focal points

- Research and academic institutions

- Public or private foundations

- Multilateral agencies (United Nations agencies, World Bank, etc.)

- Media

- Individuals

17 May 2024 - Closing of the call for nominations

July 2024 - Winners selected and notified

7 October 2024 - UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards presented at the Global Observance of World Habitat Day
